The 2017 Business Outlook for the Food and Beverage Industry

Steven Bartholomeusz, Food Industry Asia's (FIA) Head of Advocacy and Communications, provides an introduction to FIA to launch FIA Lunch Series: The CEO Forum.

Senior leaders from Thomson Reuters, Symrise, FrieslandCampina, Ingredion and Rabobank shared insight into the 2017 business outlook for the food and beverage industry at FIA Lunch Series: The CEO Forum on 21 October. During the event, organised in conjunction with Thomson Reuters and the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (DutchCham), the panellists discussed the state of the industry, market growth and consumer demand in the Asia region, and food innovation efforts to address these needs and fight against obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Gavin Maguire, Editor in Charge, Commodities & Energy, Asia, Thomson Reuters, opened the session with an introduction of the panellists, an overview of the food and beverage industry and a high-level outlook for the agriculture and commodities sectors. He also touched on economic growth in the ASEAN region.

During his presentation, Piet Hilarides, executive board member and Chief Operating Officer, Consumer Products Asia, Royal FrieslandCampina, who is also FIA Vice President, provided his thoughts on where the dairy industry is headed in 2017, as well as the state of FrieslandCampina's business in various Asian markets and the company's efforts in food innovation.

Mathys Boeren, President, Flavors Asia Pacific, Symrise, speaks on the industry's response to consumer demand in Asia Pacific.

Mathys Boeren, President, Flavors Asia Pacific, Symrise, who also sits on FIA’s Coordinating Council committee, discussed changing consumer lifestyles, behaviour and demands across the Asia Pacific region. Boeren touched on the importance of taste as a deciding factor in purchasing and consumption decisions, and shared about the industry's response to these needs, as well as its efforts in food innovation to reduce sugar content in products.

Jorgen Kokke, Senior Vice President and President, Asia-Pacific and EMEA, Ingredion Incorporated, speaks on the ingredients industry's food innovation efforts to address changing consumer needs, as well as the fight against obesity and NCDs.


Ping Chew, Managing Director & Regional Head, Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory, Asia, Rabobank, speaks on the current state of, and the 2017 expectations for,  the commodities market in the Asia region.

In addition to discussions on consumer insight and industry's response, the panellists addressed other areas contributing to the 2017 outlook, such as the regulatory landscape in Asia, food safety issues and other developments within the region.
