Amid growing policy pressures to address the rising epidemic of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, supporting good health is one of the most vital roles of the food and drink industry.
This is the view of Joanne Denney-Finch, Chief Executive, IGD, who partnered with FIA to product the newly-launched ‘Healthier Product Reformulation in Singapore’ report. In a conversation with FIA, Joanne discussed how the industry is “nudging” consumers into making healthy purchase decisions by reformulating products to become healthier, without affecting quality or taste.
On Singapore’s reformulation journey, Joanne says that the approach has been strategic and collaborative. She highlighted the effectiveness of the Singapore Health Promotion Board’s Healthier Choice symbol, noting that it has achieved “high recognition, and it is a practical and pragmatic solution to helping shoppers make good choices”. She also praised efforts like the Healthier Dining Programme in encouraging restaurants to provide healthier choices, and the National Steps Challenge in promoting the importance of physical activity for a healthy lifestyle.
Although she applauds the current reformulation efforts that food companies in Singapore are undertaking, she encourages the industry to look at global best practices to learn from and to deliver effective solutions.
With healthier product innovation and reformulation being one of the many approaches that seeks to tackle the growing rates of obesity and undernutrition in Asia, FIA and stakeholders from various sectors including government bodies and academia will take a deeper dive on this topic discussing the importance of promoting a healthy Asia driven by a multi-stakeholder approach at the upcoming 4th ARoFIIN Roundtable on 26 July 2018 in Jakarta.
