Seasoned Industry Leaders to Guide Next Phase of FIA’s Journey

FIA’s newly elected Governance Board is set to lead the next phase of the organisation’s vision to forge successful partnerships between the food and beverage industry and governments in Asia.

Having celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2015, FIA now embarks on the next stage of its journey to build on the power of partnerships to deliver a vibrant food & beverage industry in Asia based on FIA’s Core Pillars of Nutrition and Health, Food Safety and Harmonisation.

Appointed at the FIA Annual General Meeting held on 16th April, the new leadership team reinforced the organisation’s goal to promote a climate for sustainable growth for food businesses in Asia. The new Board, comprising a diverse team of seasoned industry leaders and representing a varied group of companies and categories, spanning the length and breadth of the supply chain in Asia, will spearhead the organisation’s goal to be the trusted voice of the food industry in Asia.

Mr Amit Banati (Kellogg Company) has been re-elected to the role of FIA President, while Mr Ehab AbouOaf (Mars Inc.) and Mr Manish Yadav (McDonald’s) will serve a second term as FIA Vice-President and FIA Treasurer respectively.    Mr Amit Banati, FIA President

Mr Amit Banati joined Kellogg Company as President, Asia Pacific, in March 2012. He is also a member of the Kellogg Company’s Global Leadership Team.

Prior to joining Kellogg, Mr. Banati served in a variety of board and leadership roles at Kraft Foods, Cadbury Schweppes and Procter & Gamble. He has worked extensively across the Asia Pacific region, particularly in Australia, India, China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia and Singapore.

At Kraft Foods, he was president, north Asia and Asia Pacific strategy, leading the company’s operations in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. He also led the integration of the Kraft and Cadbury businesses in the Asia Pacific region following Kraft’s acquisition of Cadbury Schweppes.

Prior to that, Mr. Banati served as President, Pacific, for Cadbury Schweppes, leading its Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore operations. He was also a member of the company’s chief executive committee.

He received a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Calcutta University and a master’s of business administration degree from the Indian Institute of Management in Lucknow.

Kellogg’s was a founding member of FIA in 2010 and Mr Banati has been a valued member of the FIA Co-ordinating Council since 2012. Prior to serving one term as FIA President from 2014-15, Mr Banati served as Vice President of FIA for two years, during which time he has been a popular leader on the FIA Coordinating Council. Kellogg been particularly active in the area of nutrition and has been a key driver behind FIA’s activities on voluntary front-of-pack nutrition labelling and the promotion of responsible advertising commitments throughout the region.

   Mr Ehab AbouOaf, Vice President

Since October 2010, Ehab AbouOaf has served as Asia Pacific President of Mars Chocolate and as a member of the Mars Global Chocolate Board of Management. Prior to taking on his current role, he led the Mars China Chocolate business. He joined Mars in 2000 and championed the company’s market entry into Egypt and then covered the North African and East Mediterranean region, leading 17 markets.

Mr AbouOaf started his career in Research & Development at Procter & Gamble in Saudi Arabia, and later played various roles within R&D around the world. He was a Group Manager in the European Technical Centre in Brussels, Belgium in charge of developing upstream global products, a Section Head in the Kobe Technical Centre in Japan championing the product program and market entry for the Home Care segment in Asia Pacific, and Global Associate Director for Home Care Products, located in Brussels, Belgium.

He is an Egyptian / Belgian citizen. He holds a B.Sc with Honours in Engineering from the American University in Cairo, following his graduation with the International Baccalaureate Diploma from the United World College of Lester Pearson in Canada. He is married and is a father of 3 kids.

Mars is a founding member of FIA. In his role as FIA Vice President, Mr AbouOaf will be an integral part of the leadership team, bringing with him tremendous depth in China and a strong drive towards measurable deliverables for FIA’s workstreams.

  Mr Manish Yadav, Treasurer

Mr Manish Yadav is Vice President, General Counsel for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa for
McDonald’s Corporation, and has held this position since October 2011.

Prior to joining McDonald’s, he held a number of senior positions with Johnson & Johnson, including Assistant General Counsel and Regional Counsel Asia Pacific. During this period he served as General Counsel for Johnson & Johnson’s Venture Capital Group and Independence Technology. He was Corporate Counsel – International Mergers & Acquisitions for Alcatel Lucent from 2000 until 2003. Prior to that he was an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell in the mergers and acquisitions group.

Mr Yadav holds a Juris Doctorate from the New York University School of Law, a Master’s of Business Administration from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelors of Commerce (Honours) from Delhi University.

McDonald’s was a founding member of FIA in 2010 and Mr Yadav has been a valued member of the FIA Coordinating Council since 2012. He is a highly respected legal counsel within the food industry and will add a unique perspective to current legal issues, financial governance and Competition Law in his new role on the FIA governance board.

   Mr Peter van Deursen, Secretary

Peter van Deursen is the chief executive officer for Cargill Asia Pacific. Van Deursen is also the platform leader for Cargill’s Food Ingredients and Systems (FIS) platform, responsible for leading the group’s business that serves food makers, food service companies and food retailers. A member of the organisation’s Corporate Center, Van Deursen is part of a core executive group that includes Cargill’s leadership team, function and platform leaders.

Prior to this position, Van Deursen was the business unit (BU) leader for Cargill’s Texturizing Solutions and Cargill Starches and Sweeteners in Europe.

Van Deursen first joined Cargill in 1990 as a management trainee in the Netherlands. He subsequently held a variety of roles with Cargill’s European Starches and Sweeteners business. This was followed by several leading positions throughout Cargill globally, including business development manager for Cargill’s Biodegradable Plastics business in the United States; commercial director for the Starches and Sweeteners business in Europe; and general manager for the Starches and Sweeteners business in Turkey.

Van Deursen holds an MBA from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands (specialisation in marketing and economics). Parallel to management experience, he has extensive experience with operations, sales, M&A, market entry and corporate responsibility issues.

Van Deursen is currently based in Singapore where he lives with his wife and two daughters.

Cargil is one of FIA’s first members and has been represented in the prestigious FIA Coordinating Council since 2010. Van Deursen will serve as FIA Secretary this year and will add tremendous value to the organisation by bringing extensive experience and knowledge on the food industry in Asia.
