Collaboration on nutrition, food innovation and standards among areas of focus
SINGAPORE, 1 JUNE 2018 – Food Industry Asia (FIA) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday to collaborate on initiatives which will enhance nutrition in India, progress food innovation and address challenges faced by the food & beverage industry in the region.
The MoU was signed by Mr Matt Kovac, Executive Director, FIA and Mr Dilip Chenoy, Secretary General, FICCI, at a business meeting presided over by Shri Narendra Modi, Honourable Prime Minister of India and Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations for Singapore, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore. The exchange took place during an official visit to Singapore by Mr Modi.

Matthew Kovac, Executive Director, FIA said “This MOU is a significant step forward for the food industries of both countries. FIA has benefited from working closely with FICCI to share expertise and knowledge on areas such as front of pack nutrition labelling and food safety throughout 2017. This official signing cements our relationship and puts us in a better position to jointly tackle the biggest challenges we see facing the food industry in Asia.”
FIA and FICCI acknowledge the valuable role that both organisations play in advancing innovation, research, education and effective public health approaches to improved food and nutrition. By working more closely together, the organisations aim to address the policy and regulatory concerns of the food & beverage industry operating in Asia.
Dilip Chenoy, Secretary General, FICCI said “Like many countries in Asia, public health levels in India are on the decline and the industry finds itself in the spotlight. Signing this MoU with FIA is an important step towards us advancing food innovation for the benefit of consumers. We will benefit from FIA’s regional experience to enhance the capabilities of food businesses in India, while ensuring the industry is represented in important dialogues across Asia.”

Areas of collaboration will include facilitating food trade between India and Singapore, harmonising standards and exploring opportunities for partnership. In addition, the two parties will organise workshops and seminars to build capacities of Indian food businesses operators and share best practice on important issues such as regulatory changes, food safety, food quality and nutrition.
With public education critical to improving diets, the MoU also signals a commitment from FIA and FICCI to collaborate on programmes to inform consumers about nutrition and healthy lifestyles, front of pack food labelling and sugar alternatives to address health concerns related to obesity, non-communicable diseases and malnutrition.
