A one day course exploring the role government affairs plays in the corporate environment. It will focus on the tactical deployment of GR strategy to advance business needs and to secure and defend licence to operate. Participants will engage with real life GR strategies and engage in workshop style activities.

Through an interactive workshop participants will:

  • Develop awareness of the established and emerging best practice trends in government relations in Asia. 

  • Examine how to identify and influence relevant government stakeholders - both in times of pro-active engagement and crises or reputational issue arise.

  • Understand the confluence of GR, public affairs and ESG goals.

  • Learn from practical exercises and real life case studies (including short video segments) developed as learning tool

11.00AM to 12.00PM: Identifying and Mapping Stakeholder Groups                       Before any strtegic engagement takes place corporations and organisations require detailed analysis of who their  stakeholders are – and what impact and influence they hold over their organisation. This provides practitioners expert insight into best practice approaches to identify, analyse and prioritise their government-related stakeholders.                                    

12.00PM to 1.00PM: Case Study - Group mapping and targeting exercise  

2PM to 3.30PM: Building an Effective Government Relations Capability
The stakeholder map is the critical first step in an effective government engagement strategy. But formation and ongoing implementation of government engagement is critical if the broader objectives are met. This session will examine theory and practice in approaches to prepare, build and execute a government engagement strategy. It will examine why policy, people, process and the public interest must all be addressed in your GR strategies. It will also examine the issues confronting foreign companies in Asian markets and explore if digital has a role to play in Government Relations.            

3.30PM to 4.30PM: Group Exercise                     
Your company has a government related challenge or opportunity. You will be asked to frame a GR strategy which can meet your objectives and to present it to your in-country management board. Group exercise with de-brief. 
                           
4.30PM – 5.00PM: Wrap-up and takeways 

Faciliator: Steven Okun is Founder and CEO of Singapore-based APAC Advisors, a public affairs consultancy working with clients on ESG, sustainability and stakeholder engagement. In addition, he is Senior Advisor for global public affairs consultancy McLarty Associates. Steve has lived and worked in Asia since 2003, most recently with KKR, and previously with global logistics company UPS. He has been elected to four terms to the Board of Governors of AmCham Singapore and served for three years as its Chairman. He served in the Administration of President Bill Clinton as Deputy General Counsel at the US Department of Transportation and is a graduate of the University of Virginia as well as its School of Law.
