Short Course on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

The course will provide the participants with an overview of how LCA can contribute to environmental sustainability assessment and give a walk-through the main LCA methodological steps. A large part of the course will also be dedicated to introducing a screening LCA tool called the life cycle check that is easily implementable in academic or business projects.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

· Understand life cycle thinking in the analysis, design and management of technological systems
· Define life cycle assessment, including its main features as well as its strengths and limitations
· Position life cycle assessment as a tool in relation to environmental sustainability
· Ensure functional equivalency of products or systems in comparative assessments
· Apply a screening LCA tool (introduced as the “Life Cycle Check”)
· List possible applications of LCA
