Obesity: Is the global food industry really to blame?

According to studies published by the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.9 billion people worldwide are considered overweight and obese. From this number, at least 2.8 million people die every year, from complications related to being overweight or obese.

Obesity is inextricably linked to an excess of caloric intake and inadequate levels of physical activity, says Professor Michael J Gibney from the Institute of Food and Health, University College Dublin, Ireland. He states that the WHO ranks excessive caloric intake as the fifth-largest contributor to global disease, while a lack of physical activity is ranked even higher, at fourth position. Excess weight and inadequate physical activity are two sides of the same coin. 

Join us for our next FIA Lunch Series session on 29 September, to hear from Professor Gibney, who is also the author of a recent book on obesity, titled “Ever Seen A Fat Fox?: Human Obesity Explored”. He will cover topics such as obesity as a new human phenomenon, the role the lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyles play in driving obesity rates, and top-down regulatory approaches and activities to tackle obesity.

Professor Michael J. Gibney is Professor of Food & Health in University College Dublin's School of Agriculture and Food Science, Director of the UCD Institute of Food and Health and Chairman of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.  

Professor Gibney graduated with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and a master’s degree in agricultural chemistry from UCD. After attaining a PhD from The University of Sydney, he took up a lectureship in human nutrition at the University of Southampton Medical School, before returning to Ireland, where he served as professor of human nutrition at Trinity College Dublin for over 20 years. 

Additionally, Professor Gibney is former president of The Nutrition Society, has served on several EU and United Nations (UN) committees on nutrition and health, and has published over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers.
